Calculate Hours Between Two Times

Set a start and an end time and the shift length appears on the right, in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. An end time before the start time is read as an overnight shift.

How the Shift Length Is Worked Out

End time minus start time, then minus the unpaid break. That's the whole formula. A 9:00 start and a 17:30 finish with a 30 minute lunch gives 8 hours even.

Overnight shifts

When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes you clocked out the next day and adds 24 hours. So 22:00 to 06:00 comes out as 8:00, and the result says the shift crosses midnight.

Why two formats

Timesheets record 7:45 but payroll software multiplies by an hourly rate, and 7:45 is not 7.45 hours. The decimal figure is minutes divided by 60, so 7:45 becomes 7.75. Both are shown side by side because you'll usually need to write down one and type in the other.
